Green light for next stage of Devonshire Park development | |
The next stage of plans for the redevelopment of Devonshire Park, which will firmly establish Eastbourne as a cultural destination, have been approved by Eastbourne Borough Council. The £40m scheme, designed by Levitt Bernstein acting as lead designer and conservation architect with TrioPlus Sport & Leisure as tennis consultant and architect, will include a new show court for international tennis events and enhanced facilities for players. The scheme will also restore and upgrade three listed theatres and provide world class conferencing and catering facilities. A new public plaza and high quality public realm will act as a ‘honeypot’ for visitors and a link between the Park and the seafront, for which Eastbourne is well known. Central to the redevelopment is a new Welcome Building that will provide a fully accessible entrance to the theatres, two new large exhibition spaces, a central box office and catering facilities. Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor David Tutt, said: “This scheme represents a game changer for Eastbourne. It will herald a new era for an area of the town that is fundamental to our long term prosperity and cultural well-being” The decision means that the project will now be submitted for planning at the end of 2015. |
